The Art of Becoming Indistractable

Hey Guys!

My name is Dev and today I am going to talk about digital detox.

In today’s day and age we all are surrounded by distractions. They are almost a click away. I am talking about Netflix , youtube, social media, etc. I am not saying that these are bad. Social media is a very powerful tool if we put it to right use rather than just consuming useless stuff which is not going to help you anywhere in life. Also there are a high chances that you will forget about the content you consumed just a moment ago. These distractions are not going to take you anywhere forward in life. Instead you are just going to remain distracted all your life and no one will even give a damn about you. Robin Sharma in his book “Who will cry when you will die?” has said that if you want to live a life, live like a noble person. Be a person who influenced people to an extreme level and contributed for the betterment of the world. So when you die people should feel that you are worth remembering and losing you was a loss in their life.

One thing you should notice that the great people are always remembered. People who contributed something positive to society are always alive in all our hearts. Another thing is that these were the people who were very focused. They didn’t give a damn about the world. They just went deeper and deeper into their art that they only had themselves for them when they were in trouble. These type of people are not distracted by any means. But today just a beep on our mobiles and we leave all our work and use the device like we are not going to get it again or that thing is not going to come again. If you want to use technology then use it at your advantage or else don’t use it. Today entertainment has become easily accessible. You should remember that entertainment is not improving you. It is slowly killing you and you are not even aware of it. If you want to do entertainment you should do it in moderation. Vivek Bindra says that we should not do entertainment instead we should do edutainment. By edutainment he means that we should use the technology to constantly learn. We all should become a life-long learner. I believe that everybody is a student of life. Everybody learns something new everyday. I also believe that if you don’t learn something new everyday than your life is boring.

When we use the distractions like social media or binge watch a series or do some activity which gives you pleasure , a chemical is released in our brain called dopamine. This hormone is also call pleasure hormone. Also it motivates us to do things which gives us pleasure. These hormone acts on the androgen receptors and gives us a feeling of pleasure. And the social media, binge watching of web series, etc. are high dopamine activities. So our brain craves for it very often. For most of the people activities like studying, reading, exercise, etc. are low dopamine activities. So our brain does not crave for it very often. And this low dopamine activities are the keys to success. Activities like studying, reading, exercise, etc. are going to take you from ground level to a high level.

You should keep a day off in a week. On this day you will not do any high dopamine activities like using social media, listening to music, watching entertainment, etc. If we don’t do these activities for one day our productivity will be at its peak level. And you will be able do things with more efficiency. Your brain will not be getting that high dose of dopamine. So your brain will look out for low dopamine activities as it will be craving dopamine. Then you will start doing low dopamine activities like studying, reading, etc. And these activities will help you grow. In long term your habit of distracting will be diminished and you will be able to work with more focus and will be able to get rid of procrastination.

Thanks for reading!
