5 Things You Can Learn From Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Hey Guys! Welcome to Curious Minds

It gives me an immense joy to introduce our first guest author Maya Sekhon. She runs two blogs, TeenVelopment where she writes about self-development for teenagers and Bollyinspo where she writes about lessons learnt from various bollywood movies.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was a movie that not only changed the Bollywood Film Industry, but it changed the audience too... If you have not seen the movie I recommend you watch it before you read this.

As we all know ZNMD was about 3 guys who go on a bachelor's trip and go through experiences that bring out what they truly want in life. They travel around Europe doing crazy activities that force them out of their comfort zone. Each experience brings out life lessons that change the 3 best friends' views on life.

Here Are 5 Things You Can Learn From The Movie

1. It’s All In Your Head.

Arjun Saluja is terrified of water...Imraan Qureshi is terrified of heights...

The very first adventure they embark on is scuba diving. Kabir in the restaurant brings up the idea, and Arjun immediately opts out. Imraan, being the kid he is, calls Arjun a chicken, “Bok Bok Bok.” After Arjun sends Kabir to the restroom with red wine all over him, we see that he is completely scared of the fact that he might go scuba diving. After Laila teaches him and dives with him, Arjun comes out of the water with tears in his eyes, realizing there is so much more to life.

After they go to the tomato festival, it is Arjun’s turn to surprise the boys. Imraan finds out that it is skydiving and, just like Arjun, opts out. Eventually, Imraan starts training and just jumps. I mean technically someone pushed him, but he did it. Once he hit the floor, he knew that the fear was in his head.

When you face fear head on you come out knowing that it was ALL IN YOUR HEAD and you can accomplish ANYTHING. Sit back for a moment and think about what your fears are and why you fear them. You’ll find out that you are holding yourself back.

2. People Don’t Change, Perspectives Do.

Even though Kabir “accidentally” proposed to Natasha, he still never got the fulfilment he thought he would marry her. After the boys became friends with Laila, Natasha got jealous. Kabir’s perspective about Natasha changed when she came to the hotel they were staying at. After she lied to the group about surprising them, argued with Kabir about trust, and was not being affectionate to Kabir, he knew that Natasha was not the girl he wanted to spend his life with.

In many cases, most think people change, when it is their perspective. Their views on life change, what they value changes, and their dreams change.

3. There Is Always Another Option.

Everybody needs a Laila in their life. A person who helps you realize that there is way more to life than what you see. Arjun was a workaholic, he only saw one vision in his life and that was money. After meeting Laila she said something that stuck with him.

Insaan ko dibbe mein sirf tab hona chahiye jab woh mar chuka ho.” – Laila

“The only time a man should be in a box is when he’s dead.” - Laila

Looking up at the stars Arjun was questioning the way he was living his life. Did money matter? Does he want to only make money? And most important. Is there something else that brings him fulfilment?

Most people in the world will suffer from doing what they think they should be doing instead of what they want to be doing. Don’t ever think that you HAVE to stay where you are. You hold all the power to get whatever you want.

4. Excuses Don’t Bring Closure.

Each of the boys came on this trip with some kind of issues, relationship, family, or uncertainty. Arjun and Imraan had a past event that caused Arjun trauma, and Imraan never knew how to get rid of the tension. Imraan thought it would pass by with the journey. Even though they went through several smiles, laughter, envious moments, competitions, and tears together, the tension only dissolved when Imraan gave a sincere apology.

Imraan made excuses on the journey of figuring out who his dad was and why he never reached out. He never sat down with his mom to talk, he kept looking at his dad’s art but never made the effort to reach out, he drove to where his dad lived but still never went to his house. The only time Imraan figured out why his dad did what he did, was when he confronted him. He asked his dad, got clarification, and let go…

You can’t find closure if you keep making excuses to move around it. Confront it, take it in, and let it go.

5. Focus On the Journey, Not The Destination.

When Laila showed Arjun that there was more to his life he realized that he was only focused on the destination. Retirement.

With many of us, it is the same thing. We go to school to get a degree. We get a job to make money. We make money for our retirement. We wait for death. Most of us don’t realize that the destination won’t bring as much fulfilment as we think it will. It is the journey where the fulfilment of laughter, happiness, sadness, failure, success, joy, adventure all happen.

Arjun realized that his only vision in life was retirement, he was only focusing on the destination. He was missing out on the journey, which is the source of happiness and all of the experiences that become memories. This is exactly why he's going with Laila to Morocco. He was done living for the destination, instead, he’s living for the journey.

This movie has hundreds of life lessons, but these are 5 of the most important. Live the way you want to live.

Dil Dhadakne Do.

Adios Amigo.
